Nebula: A Deep Dive Into Our Third Omni Blend

Some coffees are built around a single origin. NEBULA is built around an idea that the right combination of origins can do something no single one can on its own. It's the third and final blend in the Omni Trio, and it closes things out with a character all its own. When it's dialed in, it's sweet, floral, and quietly complex.

Meet the BF-X-03 Nebula, the third of our Omni Trio — three blends roasted for versatility and designed to perform across every brew method. NEBULA brings raw sugar, hibiscus, and apricot notes that hit sweet and finish with a delicate, tea-like lift. It's also worth mentioning: it's our owner Jimmy Butler's favorite cup in the whole lineup.

Nebula — sweet, floral, and built for any brew.

What multi-origin means for the cup

Blending across origins is one of the harder things to do well in specialty coffee. The goal isn't to average things out, it's to find a combination where each origin contributes something the others can't. One might carry the sweetness. Another brings the florals. A third adds the fruit that ties it together.

With NEBULA, that interplay is the whole point. The raw sugar sweetness and hibiscus come from origins selected specifically for their delicate, tea-like character. The apricot comes from a component with brighter, juicier fruit acidity. Together they create something that feels both sweet and lifted, delicate without being flat, fruited without overpowering the florals.

Why omni roasting matters

Roasting a blend for omni use means finding a profile that doesn't compromise for either brew method — it has to hold up under the pressure and heat of espresso without losing the clarity and nuance that filter brewing rewards. That's a narrow target, and it shapes every decision from blend construction to roast development.

NEBULA is roasted to sit right in that window. The raw sugar and apricot are developed enough to read as real sweetness in a shot but stay delicate enough for the hibiscus to open up fully in a pour-over. The body is present without being so heavy that it flattens the florals. It's a blend designed to be genuinely versatile, not just technically functional across methods.

What "dialing in" means for an omni blend

Dialing in NEBULA is about letting the hibiscus and apricot stay lifted without losing the raw sugar sweetness underneath. Push too hot or too fast and the florals can turn thin or perfumey. Go too coarse or too short and the sweetness can fall flat under the fruit. The blend rewards a little patience. Here's what to focus on:

Dose: For espresso, start around 18–19g in to 36–38g out. For filter, a 1:16 ratio is a solid starting point — roughly 20g coffee to 320g water. NEBULA has enough body to support a slightly longer yield in both methods if you want more of the florals to open up.

Time: For espresso, target 27–32 seconds. For pour-over, aim for 2:30–3:30 total. Within those ranges the hibiscus and apricot come through cleanly alongside the raw sugar sweetness. Outside them, the florals can read as thin on the fast end, or muted and heavy on the slow end.

Temperature: 199–201°F works well across both methods. The blend is developed enough to not need aggressive heat, and staying mid-range keeps the hibiscus from turning sharp.

Grind: Consistency matters more than any specific setting. NEBULA is expressive enough that an uneven grind will show — you'll taste it as a lack of clarity between the sweetness and the florals. Dial for evenness first, then adjust for taste.

Why it matters

NEBULA isn't just the trio's closer, it's a coffee that stands entirely on its own — delicate, sweet, and layered in a way that rewards a slower cup. Not a shortcut, not a one-note crowd-pleaser, but a carefully considered combination of origins that gives you something genuinely interesting no matter how you brew it. The raw sugar and hibiscus make it immediately inviting. The apricot keeps it lively.

In milk it holds its own. The florals recede a little but the raw sugar sweetness carries through in a way that makes lattes and flat whites feel naturally sweet and delicate, closer to a honeyed, tea-forward espresso blend than a typical fruit- or chocolate-driven one.

The ongoing loop

Because NEBULA works across methods, it's worth brewing it both ways before settling on your approach. What reads as delicate and floral as espresso becomes something brighter and more fruit-forward in a pour-over — same blend, different story. Taste both. Adjust. The coffee will show you where it wants to go.

The BIGFACE way

NEBULA is part of our Omni Trio — three blends built around the same philosophy: roast for versatility, blend for character, and never make someone choose between their brew method and a great cup. NEBULA closes that trio out with something quieter and more personal. It's the one our owner reaches for first, and once you taste it, you'll understand why.

Because when the origins line up right, the cup gives you more than the sum of its parts. That's what NEBULA is about.
