ELSHADAI ESTATE

Elshadai Estate sits along the eastern edge of the Aberdare Range in central Kenya, an area better known for pristine washed coffees than naturals. That contrast is exactly what makes this lot stand out. Grown in Kiambu County at 1,500 to 1,600 meters above sea level, this coffee develops slowly under cool nights and highland sun, building sweetness and clarity before it ever reaches the drying beds. The estate grows a mix of SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, and Batian varietals, combining classic Kenyan genetics with newer cultivars chosen for balance and durability. Harvests occur twice a year, with only fully ripe cherries selected by hand. After picking, fruit is dried on raised beds and carefully monitored as natural fermentation brings forward a layered, fruit-driven profile that feels vibrant but controlled. Elshadai takes a long-term approach to farming, reinvesting in the land through shade trees, soil regeneration, and erosion management. Coffee pulp is returned to the fields to enrich the soil, while farm practices prioritize sustainability and worker welfare throughout the season. This is a modern expression of Kenyan coffee. Bright, expressive, and intentional. A natural that respects its origin while pushing it forward. Cup Notes: Dark Chocolate • Raspberry • Cherry Cordial Process: Natural Roast: Espresso Focused - Medium Elevation: ~1500 MASL

I'm still dialing in my espresso skills, but this came at the perfect time. Flavors are exactly as described, it's a fantastic shot each time with a super thick body and great flavor and smell. Has pulled consistently as it aged and flavor has not dropped off from fresh to now.

COFFEE FAQ

Specialty coffee is scored 80 points or higher on a 100-point scale by certified graders. In practice, it means coffee that’s carefully cultivated, harvested at peak ripeness, and processed with precision. For BIGFACE, specialty means clarity, complexity, and the kind of character you can only taste when every detail is dialed in.

We work with trusted farmers and export partners in origin countries like Colombia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Ethiopia. Every release is tied to a specific farm, estate, or microlot, so you always know where it was grown, who produced it, and how it was processed.

Those flavors are naturally present in coffee. Coffee shares hundreds of the same aromatic compounds found in fruits, flowers, and spices. When you see tasting notes like grapefruit, honey, or cacao, it’s describing what the coffee expresses naturally, nothing added, just unlocked through roast and brew.

BIGFACE coffees are marked with a Best By date, we recommend enjoying them before then for peak flavor. Store your coffee sealed in its BIGFACE bag or in an airtight container at room temperature, away from heat, light, and humidity. The coffee will remain safe to drink past the Best By date, but flavor and aromatics are at their best when enjoyed before that point.

Yes. Specialty pricing reflects the investment at origin. Hand-picking cherries, extended fermentations, and careful drying all require time and labor. Paying more means better quality in the cup and better wages for producers. It’s about excellence and fairness throughout the supply chain.
